NetBeans on Mac won't launch

I use NetBeans as my IDE for RoR work, and suddenly today it stopped working. I'd click the icon in the dock, it would bounce once or twice, then quit. After some digging on Google I found a few threads where people were having the same problem, but only one that actually pointed to a workaround. Wanted to share this since other people seem to be having the problem, and the solution took some work to find.
